Will be taking a train from Tirano and need a rental car while staying in the Lake Como area. Has anyone picked one up at the Como or Milan Central Stations or would it be less of a hassle to go to one of the Milan airports ?

Going all the way to Milan and backtracking north could be an hassle. Going to the airport or to Como even more; Como lies on the west branch of the lake, the airport even more to the west, while the railway line from Tirano goes along the east shore of the lake. Have a look to car rentals in Sondrio or Lecco.
