For the itinerary you describe, I think you'll be better off with trains except for the time in Tuscany if you plan to visit small towns. In Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice a car will be a hassle to use and costly to park. Autoeurope is a great company to use to reserve in advance.

Nancy-If I'm reading your itinerary correctly, the first part of your trip you are staying in Florence, then staying in Venice, then staying in Milan. You would be better off training between these cities as there is limited and difficult parking in all of them and besides, why pay for a car when all you will do is park it? Once you get to Milan I know you can day trip to Como on public transportation, so it seems you should rent your car when you are on your way OUT of Milan.

A car is great in Tuscany - very easy driving and nice to see smaller towns. You can then make a long one day drive from Southern Tuscany to Naples/Amalfi Coast. We did this in reverse this past summer and it was not bad at all. Assuming you fly back out of Rome? So go ahead and bypass it on your way south (in your car) and then return the car to Rome when you depart.

We use Auto Europe (a consolidator) to rent our cars in Europe and usually get the hatchback style "station wagon" for our family of 4.
