Rental Cars with Luggage for 4 People in Rome / Tuscany

Hello, need to rent a car at Rome Airport and then head directly to Tuscany for a week's vacation. Current plan was to pick up the car in Rome FCO but drop it off in Siena and take a car service or train into Florence for the next part of our journey.

Question 1: Need a car for 4 adults with 4 wheeled suitcases (large not carry ons) - any advice re type of car to get ? The rental car sites are little confusing re how much room there really is in the trunk !!

Question 2: Do we really need to add on their car rental insurance to the rental ? I don't usually do that when renting a car in the U.S.

Question 3: Does it make more sense to drive into Florence and drop the rental car off there instead ?
Our apartment rental in Florence is at Giacomo Leopardi n. 14

Thanks

Check Autoeurope or their sister site Kemwel. Though part of the same company, they often show different pricing for the same vehicle.

I prefer either Europecar or Hertz

Insurance in Italy is mandatory. Odds are your policy at home will not cover you and most credit cards do not either. For peace of mind, I generally go with the no deductible extended coverage.

If you need an automatic, your choice of vehicles will be somewhat limited.

To see how many pieces of luggage will fit in the car, just hit details. You will probably need a wagon with 3/2 luggage capacity. Or a Mercedes sedan.

I'm assuming you have never driven in Italy, and are not familiar with ZTLs and rules of the road. Read this, and their free download.

For this reason, I'm going to suggest you drop your car at Florence Airport and take a taxi into the city. It might cost a little more, but a ticket would cost more than the car rental.

I’d also recommend AutoEurope and if you’re unsure of what vehicle would carry 4 pax and suitcases, call their toll free number. They are knowledgeable and very helpful. I would return the car in Florence but make sure to not enter the ZTL or you’ll get a hefty fine. Your apartment is within the ZTL zone. Simplest thing to do is return the car outside the zone and hop a cab to your lodgings.

Your credit card CDW is invalid in Italy. If you check the rates at AutoEurope for $0 deductible insurance, they are quite reasonable and will add to a stress less vacation.
