Coming from Rome so thought is train up to get rental car at the Orvieto Rail Station. Logic is this puts me out of Rome with a simple and fast train ride, and begins good area to start to exploring my way North in Tuscany. I have read all of the cautions / concerns on driving in Italy and think that I am up for the Tuscany drive. I would like to avoid larger cities, super challenging roads, and the much dreaded ZTL zones. Is this a good location to get a car and start a road trip? Other suggestions / recommendations welcomed.
I want to end up in the Northwest Tuscany area so I can drop car at a rail station – preferably on a rail line that will take me to La Spezia / Cinque Terre area. I was not keen to drive up to La Spezia. I was hoping for a car drop at a rail station – to avoid an airport drop than hassle of rushing to a train – Pisa looked the most promising, but, I think I would have to drop at airport. If some Tuscan locations are more advantageous for car drop near train, but require rail transfer please advise. Any suggestions on an easy / best station that has a rental car drop and gets me heading toward La Spezia?
