Rental car to Lido/Venice?

My wife and I will be traveling from Florence to Lido, spend 3 days there and Venice, then fly from Marco Polo airport home. Along with us will be our 10 month old boy, so to ease the travel we're going to drive instead of taking the train like we've done in the past. I'm wondering if it's worth driving the car onto Lido and keeping it, or to drop it off at a car rental office before we hit Lido. We've been to Venice before, and will pop in there, but we wanted to experience Lido this time as well. Does anyone have any experiences dropping off a car at Marco Polo airport?
Thanks!

How will you get to Lido? The car ferry across the lagoon, the ferry from Punta Sabbioni or up the spit from the south? Any of those are not particularly fast. And when you leave Lido to drive to the airport which is north of Lido, how will you go? Any of those will be even slower getting to the airport. What will you use the car for when in Lido and Venice. Surely you won't forgo Venice when you can see it from Lido? I'm sure these questions have all crossed your mind....

Thanks for your reply and questions. I was thinking we'd take the car ferry across the lagoon, but is there a better way? To get to the airport I thought to back track and drive around to Marco Polo.
Having a car on Lido may come in handy if we want to check out the island, which I believe is 11 kms long. For Venice, it's useless. My original thought was to drop it off at whatever car hire office and go it on foot, but with the baby boy, I'm thinking about keeping it to get us and all of our stuff to the airport. Having been to Venice but not to Lido, I was hoping to find out if it's still going to be easier to get around, and to the airport, with a car or just a waste of money. J

Jair, Have you driven in Italy before? Don't forget the "usual" warnings about I.D.P.'s and the dreaded Z.T.L.'s. If you need further information, post another note. Cheers!

I've taken the car ferry to Lido a couple times as we have friends there but it's expensive and time consuming. There's not a whole lot to see on Lido and the main part is small enough to walk everywhere.

Taking a car to Venice is just not needed and a big waste of time and money. I also don't see how a 10 month old is easier in a car than on a train. Yes, I'm a parent and yes I've taken the cars and trains. There's no way I would take a car to Venice.
