We will be returning to the states on Sun., June 7. Should we drop our car off on the 6th and get our own transportation from our hotel to FCO or is rental car return easy enough to do on the morning of our return?

I would drop the car at the airport Sunday afternoon, stay in Rome that night and catch the train back out to the airport the following morning. Your flight is late enough that you don't need to waste a boring evening out by the airport.

Frank's question is correct. Assuming you're asking if you should drop your car at the airport before spending one night in Rome, then yes.

sorry about the lack of info. We'll be arriving in Rome 2 weeks earlier and touring Tuscany. We'll be arriving back in Rome on the 6th and had planned on staying somewhere near the airport. After reading some other blogs, we're wondering if we should keep our car, find a hotel a little farther out and return the rental car before our 1100 flight out. Is the car rental return in a convenient area? Would we do better to return the car when we get into Rome on the 6th, and just take a taxi to the airport? We don't have reservations for the 6th yet.

Hi Doug and Frank; let me tag on a related question. I'm returning from Pompeii and Ciampino seems on the way, also closer to town. Do you see any problem with returning at Ciampino?

Just make sure you leave enough time if you return the car the asme day. Lines at the airport can be long. We gave ourselves two hours and needed every minute of it. i would drop off the night before and stay near the airport.
