Planning a trip to Tuscany in July. We will be there for two weeks starting and ending in Florence. I have driven in Italy before , and plan to do so on this trip. I'd like to rent a car in Florence and return it somewhere in Tuscany and train back to Florence. Any advise on the best city where I might return the car and be able to catch a fast train back to Florence?
Currently I have only plans for driving out of Florence, spending two nights in Terriciola as we will attend a concert nearby.
Is there a reason why you can’t return it in Florence if that is where you will return? If you are scared to drive into the city you can return it at the airport rental center, out of the city streets and next to the freeway.
Your fast train options are limited since the fast train only generally stops in large cities. Verona, Bologna and the like, but if you're thinking rural, generally southern Tuscany there aren't really any places that fit your criteria. Chiusi and Orvieto are small towns where people often rent cars but both are on the slow train. Keep in mind that smaller towns have fewer company options so you would need to rent keeping that mind. Also watch the more limited hours of small town rental places and Sunday closures.
Arezzo and Siena sort of fits your requirements but unless you are going to drop there and then stay there a few days you are close enough to Florence to just return back there.
Good luck,

Terricciola in in the Val d’Era (Era Valley). I presume you are going to Andrea Bocelli’s birthday town (Lajatico) at one of his concerts. That’s too far and out of the way from any of the locations mentioned by Tod. The best option is to return the car at the Florence airport.
On the way there refuel your car here. It’s on the freeway just past Montelupo. There might be other locations closer but that is close enough and it doesn’t require to get off the freeway.

After refueling return the cat to the rental center at the airport on via Palagio degli Spini, here:

Easy peasy.
