Hi,
Is it difficult to return the rental car in Florence, Santa Maria Novella location? I'm worried about ZTL zones. Then other option was the airport and then take a tram to the train station. That seems much easier, but then we have to take a tram to the train station with all of our luggage. Thank you!

Florence SMN train station is in a ZTL zone as is much of central Florence. Aside from the traffic congestion in the area, you can view the difficulty getting access to the station if you Google up “Florence ZTL zones”

Do you think it would be better to just return it at the airport then and take the tram to the station?

That’s what I would do. There are so many travelers that get traffic citations from entering the ZTL zones in Florence— they seem to be almost unavoidable. It’s one city I wouldn’t even try to drive into for the traffic congestion alone.

There are posts here with directions on how to return a car in Florence safely
If you drop at the airport you could take a taxi to your hotel rather than the tram ( probably about 22 euros)
The car agencies are a bit offsite so you would need to take a shuttle from drop off to terminal to catch a tram
Where is your Florence hotel-close to tram stop?
