Rental Car Question: Flying into Venice to Domites to Venice Train to Rome

Hello,
We are almost finished planning our first trip to Italy with our adult sons, our daughter in law and our younger daughter. We are getting excited, this forum has been so helpful.

The first leg of our trip is flying into Venice, renting a car for all six of us at the airport and heading straight to the Dolomites for several days. Then we will drive back to Venice drop off our car and have train tickets into Rome. We are struggling whether we should return the rental car to the airport or pay a fee and drop it off to Mestre. With six of us, we want to easily get to the train station with our luggage for the next half of our trip. We would rather not split up into several Taxis to the train station.

Any helpful suggestions or ideas? We know the fees associated with dropping in a different location but we have never been before to Europe and are trying to prepare for everything.

Thank you kindly,

Have you already rented your car. If so you can request a pick up at the airport and drop off at Mestre. We rented our car last year in Palermo Sicily and drop off at Catania Sicily with only a fee of $20 extra . I would suggest you pay the fee and drop off at Mestre if it is not too expensive, as you will spend that much in taxi far for you all to the station.

If you have not already rented your car - Auto Europe would be my suggestion. Hopefully you have your international drivers license as well.

If there’s a drop off fee it won’t be too much

For 6 people you will need a van or 2 cars

Call AutoEurope and see how they can help you

All drivers must have an IDP along with your Drivers License
Be sure to read up on driving in Italy

Once you know the car agency and address you can Google map to see how far to station
Probably very close by

You could also consider other drop off places
Verona, Bologna, etc
Take a look at Google maps and see which might be closer as you leave Dolomites

The driver drops off the other 5 and luggage and goes alone to return the car, eliminating the need for everyone to schlep luggage.... ??

How well do you do being sharp & alert after what presumably is an overnight flight to drive 'to the Dolomites'

Thank you! We aren't worried about the fee, just the logistics of getting to our train. How far is the car drop off to the station? We haven't rented the car yet, and are for sure getting a van.

Hi - I just used Google Maps - Hertz car rental Mestre and it is a 5 minute walk to the train station.
Hope this helps - I would google Map Avis and other car companies as well.
Hope this helps your decision.
