All your rental car agencies are in the Via Borgognissanti (it's actually a street) area of Florence. Check Google Maps to see how far they are from the train station. They are not out of the city, but they are not in the ZTL or the walking district. You have Avis, Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Auto Europa and Europcar. Don't forget your IDP, you get it at your local AAA office. If you don't have it, they can't rent you a car.

But from the current ZTL maos, you'll want to drive straight out on the Borgo Ognissanti until you're past the city walls. No turns.

@Kent... I am not afraid....:) Actually I don't know how far it is from the train station but I always rent at the Florence airport. I know I dropped a car there once and then took the train to Rome, but I don't remember how I got to the train...
I always head immediately to the freeway to be sure I do not get caught in a zone...

We have rented a car in Florence, Avis I think. Anyway the car rental shops are about two short blocks from the train station (heading away from the historic district). Straight shot out of Florence. Warning. Returning the car must be done during non rush hour times in the morning. Aim for say 10 a.m. or later. Also be aware that just because you've reserved an automatic doesn't mean one will be available.
