Rental Car Pick-Up & Drop-Off Locations

We are looking to rent a car in Pisa, drive to Montalcino for 3 nights, then drop the car off in Florence. Are the airport car rental locations near the train stations, or do we need to use one of the "downtown" car rental locations?

The Florence airport is not near the main train station.

But you can get to the airports from the train stations by bus. In general, train stations are located in city centers. Airports, because of the inherent conflict between buildings and planes, are usually a ways out in the country.

After renting cars for all of our European trips, we have come to the conclusion that renting at an airport or main train station is so much easier. We have also rented from downtown locations. The trick there is finding the rental office. We take a taxi to avoid getting lost and arriving at the agency late. The cost of a taxi will offset the surcharge of renting at the train station or airport. It is also easier to drive out of the airport (international type signs and closer to the main roads) than navigate out of downtown towards the autobahn/main road. You will also have a better chance of getting the car you want at an airport or train station. We always request a compact, manual, and diesel. Have fun driving through the hilltowns!

The Avis drop off downtown in Florence is difficult to get to and manuver thru Florence.

We just returned from our trip and we picked up our car at the Pisa Airport location (Europcar) and returned it in Siena after being in Montepulciano.

Pisa airport rental car location has most all the car rental companies at one locations. It was extremely easy to get on the FI-PI highway to get where you're going from the Pisa airport car rental location.

Also, we highly recommend Europcar rental company!

Happy travels.
