Rental Car pick-up, drop-off in Italy: are we asking for trouble?

Between Amalfi and Firenze, we plan a week in Tuscany, with rental car. We plan to train fm Amalfi to Rome airport (Saturday), pick up car, and after a week drop at Perugia airport (Saturday). These locations to best avoid mid-day rental car office closures and assure train connections. Is there a better way? Thrifty makes it sound possible, but we seek help in knowing if we're on the right track in planning. Please help!

Why not just drop off the car at the airport in Florence? Then cab or bus into Florence. I actually like Thrifty on Italy, I think that we have almost always rented from them in the past. Having said that they don't have very many offices that are NOT at airports. So you are limiting your drop off locations.

Hmmm, or maybe "Duhhh" Seems I may have been over thinking this. We were cautioned to avoid driving in/near Florence (and other major cities), especially to avoid the restricted traffic zones of Florence. Am I assured that the Florence airport can be located by car without intersecting the dreaded traffic zone? Is it truly as easy as it sounds? In that case, you are my hero, and we'll adjust plans with Thrifty. Grazie mille!

There is as clique on the Helpline which specializes in fear-mongering fellow travelers about Italian driving as if it were Africa. The ZTLs NEVER cover highways or airports, in any Italian city.

We spent a week in Tuscany with a rental car and dropped it off at the Florence Airport. You are not anywhere near the ZTL zone. We rented through AutoEurope and ended up with Eurocar which was fine. Definitely either take or rent a GPS. Once we were off the highway, the signs were not loud and clear, and we felt like we were going in circles, but Garmin guided us right into the airport. There's some construction so we couldn't figure out where to return the rental car, but finally figured out to drive into the long term parking to the Eurocar "return row".
