My husband and I are planning on renting a car from 9/21/08-9/25/08, with a pick up in Florence and a drop off in Rome. Any suggestions about pick up and drop off sites - are the airports easier to get to and from than city sites?

Cindy - there are multiple sites to drop off a rental car, all dependent on who you're leasing from. Downtown the most obvious drop-off is Termini Station from which you can catch a taxi/train/metro/bus to almost anywhere.
Outside of Rome, many folks drop off at Orvieto and then ride the train into town, a little more than 1 hour away, again arriving at Termini.
If you enter town on the A1 Autostrada and hit the GRA (Loop around town), it's an easy drive to the Airport (about 15 miles outside town). From there you can take a taxi or ride the train back into town. Although very easy, it's also very time consuming. Plan on at least 2 hours to go out, turn in your car, and get back into town.
If you have a GPS you can find Termini fairly easily. It really comes down to how comfortable you are driving in Italian traffic!

Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely a bit concerned about driving near Rome, so the Orvieto drop off may be the best way to go!
