We are going to Italy for our 3rd time. We have never rented a car before. We want to spend time in Florence, pick up a rental, drive to our accomodation in Chianti, and on to Amalfi, then to Rome to drop off the car. Our concern is the best places to pick up and drop off the rental in those cities. (ie. at the airport, train station, city location...) We've already decided to bite the bullet and drive this portion of the trip. Please help. Thanks, Laura
You're not biting the bullet. Having a rental car in Italy frees you to see the hilltowns and, by the way, save some money because it can be more affordable to stay in smaller towns.
I've picked up in downtown Florence. The offices are clustered just away from the historic center. It's easy to drive out of town.
I would, however, drop the car before going to Amalfi and Rome. There's no need for a rental car on the Amalfi Coast and it is a challenging place to drive. The road is windy and congested. My suggestion, after you spend time in Chianti, is to drop the rental in Orvieto and get on the train through Rome and on to Naples.
Unfortunately all the car rentals in Florence are in a congested area just outside of the city but your best bet is the one closest to the train station or just a short cab ride out away from that area.
HERTZ is on via Erbosa Tel 055.6580206. (less than 8km from train station but at least a bit away from city)
or on via Borgognissanti which is in close proximity to train station: AVIS Tel 055.213623.
Definitely drop off car outside of Rome and take the train in!!!
hope this helps,
Kim
