Rental Car location right outside of Rome?

Hello all! I thought in one of his books Rick gave a suggestion as to where to pick up a rental car right outside of Rome if planning to drive to Tuscany. Does anyone know or remember the location that he gave? We are arriving in Rome, spending two days, and then would like to rent a car to tour Tuscany. Thank you!

Ciampino would work.

Also the places around Termini -- it's a fairly straight-forward shot out to the east to the beltway.

Don't know where RS recommends picking up rental car but we did it the easy way--took a taxi to Campcieno airport and got the car there. We drove straight up the autostrada to the Montalcino area. It could not have been easier--a breeze getting out of there. We did meet up with some tourists who got their car in Rome and they said it was very nerve wracking and they felt lucky to get out alive.

I'm not sure what Rick recommends, but I'd consider renting your car in Orvieto--it's a 1-1.5 hour train ride from Rome. We were in Orvieto this past fall and I noticed a rental car agency (Hertz I think but there are probably others) very near the train station.

I also suggest picking up in Orvieto.I know Rick suggests leaving the car in Orvieto before going to Rome.

Michelle, I agree with renting your car in Orvieto. There are both Hertz & Avis offices there, practically next door to each other. I would also highly suggest spending a day in Orvieto. It is a great town. The car rental companies would probably allow you to leave your luggage in their office during the day while you sight-see...we did that with Hertz there.

I leased and, unfortunately, the airport was my only option for dropping off.

Orvieto would work perfectly for picking up enroute to Tuscany. Catch a train from Rome and pick up your car in Orvieto.
