You should call AutoEurope's 800 phone # in the States with specific questions. Italy requires purchase physical damage and theft insurance to be purchased on any car rentals. In the States, they call that LDW (Loss Damage Waiver), which is often covered by some credit card companies. I would also suggest charging the rental on a Gold or Platinum card that may offer some benefits. The racket in Italy is to tack another expensive optional insurances like Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and Personal Effects Coverate (PEI) PAI has some minor medical insurance added that people don't need. PEI is if somebody steals everything out of your carand might be covered by your homeowner's policy. You should not take the last two coverages. You can read about Hertz' protection policies on: http://www.hertz.com/rentacar/productservice/index.jsp?targetPage=USHowProtectedAreYou.jsp&leftNavUserSelection=globNav_3_5_1&selectedRegion=United States#HertzPersonalAccidentInsurance(PAI)

Hi Ron,
Previously, I rented from Hertz and used the coverage on my Capital One Venture card. Someone swiped the rocker panel on the car in Cortona, and my CC covered it. That was my one experience with rental damage that I can share.
