Rental Car in Tuscany

I am looking to rent a car when leaving Florence to have for a few days while driving through Tuscany. I want to drop they car off when we get to Sorrento. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should pick up a car in Florence (city or airport rental agencies)? Also same for where I should drop the car in Sorrento? Thanks.

I can't help you with Sorrento, but I would pick the car up at the airport in Florence. You can catch an express bus from the train station to the airport for 5€.

Several years ago I picked up a car at Europcars' agency on Via Gelsomino on the outskirts of Florence. I took a taxi to get there. It is a shorter distance from the city center than the airport. It is an easy shot out of town from there. Check it out on a map.

Most of your car rental agencies in Florence are in Via Borgo Ognissanti, Avis, EuropCar, etc. Look them up on Google maps. Don't forget your International Driving Permit to rent a car in Europe, you can obtain them at AAA. One more thing, ZTL's. ZTL's are limited traffic zones to control the amount of traffic going in and out of the major tourists areas. They are manned by cameras and you have to understand in Italian to read them, they are not in any other language. The fines are steep and you can imagine if you drive in and out of those areas how expensive it could get.

What Miguel is telling you is the very reason I suggested picking up your car at the airport. You will avoid the ZTL's. Do know what the signs look like, because the small towns have ZTL's too. They are easy to avoid if you know what you're looking for.

I suggest you go onto Hertz's website and identify their Sorrento locations. You can go onto Mapquest and see which location serves you best. Then, compare Hertz's rates and AutoEurope's rates to see which is most favorable. With AutoEurope, you'll often pickup the car at Hertz as they're consolidators. Both are good operations in Italy. I recently picked a rental car up at the Sansovino location of Hertz and turned it in 1 hr. north of Rome at a rail station. There were no drop off fees. Hertz gave me directions which kept me out of the ZTL's.
