We are traveling in a party of 4 from Cinque Terra to a Villa in Tuscany (6 days -40km south of Florence). We fly out of Florence. I'm thinking the best idea is to get a car at the Florence Airport; use it to site see the towns in Tuscany and then drop it at the Airport as we leave? Got the part about the International Drivers License.
So am I missing something on the best and most economical way to get around this area? Drove here in 2001, so not too worried about the countryside. Plan to stay away from the city traffic. Maybe drop the car at a Metro or bus station that would take us into the museums? Any tips on a great car deal would be welcome.

You don't have to pick and drop the car at the same location. La Spezia is a convenient starting point when coming from the Cinque Terre and then you could stop at San Gimignano or other town en-route to your villa. I usually get price quotes from a broker like Auto Europe or Kemwel (related companies).
That is what I have done and not had any problems. I think it is easier to avoid the dreaded zones. There are usually more options for rental car companies in an airport location.
