Rental car in Sicily

My husband and I are going to be in Sicily Sept/Oct of this year. We will need to rent a car in Trapani and want to drop it off in Ragusa. Is that possible? If so, which rental company is the most reliable and cost effective? Thanks!

Check out autoeurope. We rented from Hertz through them. We rented in Siracusa and returned to Palermo airport.

We also used Hertz. Picked up in Siracusa and returned in Trapani. We rented thru Autoeurope

What I did to determine where to pick up and drop a car was to look at google maps and find cities that had the same rental car company. It does look like there could be a Hertz in Ragusa

Another Hertz customer here. Picked up at Catania airport and returned to Palermo city center. Very pleased.

There are benefits by going directly through the agency and NOT using a broker like AutoEurope.
I used AutoEurope and Kemwell for many years and now rent exclusively with SIXT. You will have a much larger choice of vehicles if you rent direct with an agency, rather than a broker.

Do check rentals for Ragusa; a few seem to have closed in recent years; there may be rentals at Ragusa's airport but that is far from the city. I prefer renting from Catania airport and have done that a few times in recent years.
You can certainly rent from one city and drop off in another.

If you drop off in a different location than where you picked up the car, there is a possibility that there would be an extra charge for the convenience. Check with the rental company to confirm what charge, if any, is involved.

Back in 2012, we reserved directly with Europcar, and picked up at the Palermo airport on Sicily, then turned it in in Sorrento on the Italian mainland. I don’t recall whether there was a one-way drop-off fee or not on that trip, and the cost, if there was one. Europcar was very easy to work with, and we’ve used them many times, including last summer’s France/Germany trip, where we rented in eastern France, drove the car in both countries, but turned the car back where we got it, in France.

In general, I do try to book directly instead of thru a 3rd party/broker. I avoid booking.com, and won't book with a 3rd party for air travel or Viator or Get your Guide. I do make an exception for Autoeurope. We almost always use them, every time I've checked, Autoeurope has been cheaper than booking direct. Further, when we had an issue with Europcar in Portugal, it was Autoeurope that helped resolve the situation.

Autoeurope has an 800 number and the customer can talk to an agent about trickier situations like one way rentals.

One thing some are not aware of is, Hertz, Avis, etc., in Europe are not related to the U.S. companies, so if you have a problem with Hertz in Italy, the U.S. office is unable to help.

I do have a rental coming up in York, England, and I did book directly with a local company that did come highly recommended. If a person does want to book direct, I guess my suggestion would be to talk to the place you are staying and look for recommendations

We rented and returned our car in Florence, traveling in it from 9/30 to 10/12 in 2024. It seemed the best place to be able to pick up and drop off the car, and it was perfect to see all the hill towns and spend time off the train path, but...... be very careful when driving in Florence. We just now received 2 fines for traffic violations in Florence, 86 Euro each, both for driving in unauthorized areas. We were totally lost trying to return the car. If you rent in a city, be sure you have good directions on the return process!
