Rental car in Lake Como

Hi everyone. Just need some advice. We arrive in Varenna on 14th June 2017 and heading to Dolomites on 18th June. Since it is a Sunday, we have to pick our rental car in Como town on the Saturday 17th. What would you suggest that we do after we pick the car, leave the car at our hotel Eremo Gaudio or can we drive to nearby towns etc in Lake Como . We do not mind leaving the car at the hotel if driving is bothersome around the area. Any suggestions for drives while we have the car on that Saturday is most welcome. Thank you so much

I've had no experience driving in Italy but wanted to mention that the hill town of Bergamo is about a 1-hour drive from Como and would be a worthy destination if you feel you've seen most of the Lake Como highlights by the 17th.

I totally understand the question.
when we had a car and stayed at Bellagio the roads in the area ( in May) where not that difficult to drive around,(other than heaps of bike riders) but parking in the small towns can be at a premium. I made sure we had hotel parking available for our next stay in Varenna ( may 2017)
the ferries on the lake as so easy, frequent , and nice that you may find them preferable for visiting the towns on the lake. but for further away, the car would be good, sorry I can't suggest any.

Thank you acraven and glennlorrainer, much appreciate. It is just to wonder what is best to do with the car on the day we pick it up. Agreed we will use the ferries a lot before the Saturday. Just wanted advise re driving around the area. We do not mind bringing the car back to the hotel to stay while we use ferries. But acraven the idea driving to Bergamo sounds good so will google. Hopefully I will get. Ore feedback from other readers. Thank you

I can eagerly recommend Bergamo as a great destination. Two years ago we spent three nights there and really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the old quarter and took a taxi to ""La Citta Alta," which was very intersting.

Another recommendation is Padua, where we spent another three nights before visiting Bergamo. I particularly enjoyed the evenings visiting the piazzas in the old quarter. At night they are filled with tables and diners from the various restaurants. These places provided a very tranquil experience in the evenings. We visited the major attractions, but my favorite was the evening hanging out and people watching.

Buon viaggio,
