Rental Car In Italy Do you need to buy the extra CDW Insurance

Looking at rental car rates it appears that CDW is included but the rentor is obligated for certain amounts that I really don't understand. They all offer additional coverage at about $22 a day. Is it really needed?

John, You'll need to clarify what the $22 per day covers? If it provides zero deductible for collision or other damage, it would probably be a good idea. I always like to make sure I have good coverage with rental cars, so usually pay for the best CDW. As you'll be driving in Italy, some information that may be of interest..... One important point to note is that for driving in Italy, each driver must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These are valid for one year, and easily obtained at any AAA office (two Passport-sized photos required, which in some cases are provided by the issuing office). Failure to produce an IDP if requested can result in fines on the spot! Have a look at This Website for more detailed information. You may also want to search other Posts here regarding the Zona Traffico Limitato areas that are becoming increasingly prevalent in many towns in Italy (especially Florence!). EACH PASS through one of the automated Cameras will result in a €100+ ticket! A GPS along with a good Map would also be a good idea. Be sure to also give some thought to the question of CDW. If you accept the CDW offered by the rental firm, it will be expensive but will provide "peace of mind". Some "premium" credit cards provide rental vehicle insurance, however I've found this to be somewhat complicated so I just accept that offered by the rental firm. Check the Car Rental section in Europe Through The Back Door for further information. Happy travels!

I am reading more and more about the ZTL's and how folks are getting tickets mailed to them months after they return home. We don't plan on driving to any of the big city's like Rome, Venice or Florence but we would like to park near and then explore the city. My concern now is when we visit the hill towns. Some don't allow traffic behind the walls and I am assuming there will be signs directing us where to park. Are there situations where you don't know you are about to enter a ZTL until you are right in it?

You'll see the big parking lots outside the walls with no problem. The streets inside the walls will be so tight, you probably wouldn't even want to drive into them, but the ztl signs are there anyway.
