Hi all wondering if it is better to rent a car when we get to Florence or reserve a car before we leave the states.
Reserve a rental before you go and be sure there's free cancellation if you change your mind or get a better deal later. Reserving it before you leave on the trip gives you time to research and find the best deal and a reputable company. Check your credit card and/or travel insurance for coverage details. You can research deals online, via AAA, Costco, etc.
It depends-are you arriving by train or flying in? if staying, rent it when you leave-the city is full of ZTL's (sp?) and pretty easy to navigate on foot. Finally, your best rates are before you leave the states, and don't forget to get your drivers' permit before you leave.
I usually get cars at www.autoeurope.com
Be aware that is better not to have a car while in Florence, because you can’t use it (traffic restrictions for non residents), so if you plan to stay in the city, don’t rent it during those days. If you plan to visit the Tuscan countryside after Florence, then book a car for the day you depart from Florence.
We always got it at the airport for the day we leave because it is very easy to rack up expensive tickets by making a mistake exiting town. You CAN get from the rental agencies out of Florence without triggering the ZTL cameras, but it is also easy to make a wrong turn and if you go around the block in a ZTL a couple of times you can end up with a handful of very expensive tickets in just a few minutes. There is a public transport from the SMN train station to the airport so it is cheap and convenient. If you do decide to rent from an agency in Florence be sure to get a good exit map and study it carefully.
