Rental car in Balogna

We're shopping for a rental car that will carry 7 people for our trip to Bologna this July. Has anyone out there had experience (either good or bad) with Discover Cars rental? All the major companies we are used to dealing with are super expensive for a 12 day rental.

sadly, prices for car rentals are very high now. Have you called AutoEurope? They are a car rental broker based In Maine. Call and see what they offer. We have booked with them for more than twenty years of European travel.

Try www.autoeurope.com.
It's a reputable broker/consolidator founded in Germany then transferred in Maine when the founder moved to the US. Most of us here in this forum use it. They have deals with the main companies operating in Europe (like Hertz, Avis Budget, Europcar).

Since Covid struck, rental car costs skyrocketed worldwide (even in the US). July is also the month where rental cars in Europe are most expensive. You can try to employ these strategies to limit the costs:

  1. See if you can limit the days you will need to rent a car.
Bologna is a big city where a car is not needed at all. Actually a car in Bologna makes as much sense as a car in Manhattan: basically an expensive hassle I'd rather not have. Consider also that the historical city center of Bologna has traffic restrictions for those who are not residents (with permit). To visit Bologna you should rely on foot, on taxi, on buses. If you have a car while in Bologna it will need to stay parked the whole time at a garage or at your hotel, since it cannot be used in the city unless you are a resident with permit.
Also you should do the same to visit other popular cities in the region, such as Parma, Modena, Ferrara, Ravenna. They are all efficiently connected to Bologna via train. Once you reach those cities, the best way to visit those cities is also on foot, or taxi, when necessary.
A car is helpful only to visit the countryside and small villages, since in that case public transportation options, although available, are limited, especially on Sundays. If you plan to visit countryside locations, rural villages, then bunch those in a day or two, then rent a car only for that time.

  2. Consider renting 2 or 3 cars instead of one van.
Renting a van in Italy generally costs as much as 3 or even 4 compact cars. If you can fit your party in two cars and there are at least 2 adults willing to drive, you will save big.

  3. Consider to pick up the car prior to July 1, (if your travel dates allow it)
There is a big jump in car rental prices between June and July. If you can manage to pick up your car on June 30 or earlier you can save quite a bit.

I should have mentioned that will be staying in the small village of Montelupone and sightsee the Marche area from there. Also our fellow travelers are either too old or young to drive so I'm it.
We're familiar with all the big rental car companies. Hoping someone has suggestions on a local or regional option.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks Roberto. I ended up reserving a car with AutoEurope. It's changeable and refundable up to 7 days prior so we'll wait and watch for any better deals.
