We are planning to travel from Rome to Perugia on a Saturday. We wanted to pick up car in Perugia but rental agency closes at 1:00 and train schedule isn't convenient. So my question is where is the easiest pick up location in Rome to drive to Perugia/Assisi? We will have the rental car for a week to tour Umbria. Thanks in advance for your help.
Bump!
Doug, there are many rental car vendors in Rome. Part of your decision will be determined by who you rent through. For many folks, the Roma Termini Train Station is a convenient place to retrieve a rental car. Others do not want to drive in downtown Rome so they opt to pick up a car at the FCO airport. From the airport, it's easy to get on an expressway and avoid driving in the city. Other folks ride the train to Orvieto and pick up a car there. So it would depend somewhat on your comfort level of driving in a big city like Rome. This link of Car Rental Locations in Rome, Viterbo, Orvieto, Civitavecchia, and Chiusi may help you. If you do choose to drive in Rome, be aware of the ZTL's in Rome and make sure you have the correct paperwork (an International Driving Permit for example). You don't wanted your vacation to be adversely impacted by a Random Traffic Stop. Perugia and Assisi are wonderful towns. We've primarily traveled by train to Perugia... and traveled quite often by car to Assisi. You'll enjoy the ride. Parking was a challenge for us in Perugia, but we were there last with a car during the chocolate festival. Assisi had many more options. But again, almost all our other trips to Perugia were by train. Good Luck!
