Rental car from Rome Airport

We are renting a car from Rome Airport to head to Tuscany in October. Is there a particular agency we should or should not use? Thanks!

Use a consolidator for better prices.
www.kemwel.com or www.autoeurope.com
The above are two companies based in Maine that are now part of the same corporate group. Check prices with both as they are not always the same.
They work primarily with Europcar, Hertz and Avis, probably the largest car rental companies operating in Italy. Europcar, the largest, usually has better deals.

Airport auto rentals often come with substantial additional fees, tolls and taxes. I use city rental offices and pickup rental cars as I'm leaving town.

I suggest you take the express train into Rome Termini and transfer to the 70 minute local train to Orvieto. The Hertz car rental office is across the street from the train station--100 yard walk. Both of the above mentioned consolidators often book Hertz cars.

The drive from Orvieto to Siena and the area just south of Florence is about 1 1/2 hours--all 4 lane motorway. I think you'll find most roads throughout Tuscany to be easy to navigate and well paved if just a little crooked. It's the way to see the region, however.

We used Hertz as part of a package. It went well. Easy pickup and easy drop off. And 14 months later no tickets.

The above observation that renting from a city location is cheaper than from the airport is correct. However if you go straight from FCO upon landing go Tuscany, the extra money and time for getting to town to get your car may not be worth the savings. I would compare the two. Taking the train (or taxi) from FCO to downtown Rome (or Orvieto) is not free, and delays your arrival to Tuscany by at least one hour. So put your options on a spreadsheet and decide.

We used Avis last year without any issue. We also rented from the airport as we found the rates much cheaper than renting in town. I looked at several different companies and several different locations and this was the least expensive for the car we needed.

We have had great success with AutoEurope. Also check all the majors, sometimes they have a good sale on.
