We are heading to Italy in a few weeks and would like to pick up a car outside of Cinque Terre to drive through Tuscany and ultimately end up in Positano. I know pick up/drop off won't be possible in either, so I'm wondering what neighboring towns would be best. Are La Spezia and Sorrento the best options? Thank you in advance!

La Spezia Is the closest town to the CT where you can pick up rental cars.
The towns with rental car offices closest to Positano are Sorrento, and a bit farther on the opposite direction, Salerno.

One important point to note is that each driver listed on the rental form will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. You'll also have to be extremely vigilant to avoid the dreaded ZTL (limited traffic) areas which exist in many Italian towns, as hefty fines will result for EACH pass through one. There are also speed cameras, including the devious Traffic Tutor which measures not only instantaneous speed but also average between two points. Violate either parameter and expensive tickets will follow.

Thank you, Ken! I already have my international driving permit! The other tips are extremely helpful!
I will plan to do La Spezia and Sorrento.
