In planning our vacation, we really want to experience the Hill towns in Tuscany and Umbra. We are not planning on driving in any of the large cities. We plan on spending 4 nights in Rome and then have looked into taking a train to Orvieto for 2 nights. The question comes in getting to Tuscany. I think there is a Hertz rental in Orvieto but don't know if we should even count on that even with a reservation. Our thoughts are which larger city could we take a train to pick up the rental car avoiding the inner city center. IN the hill towns we do not plan on driving into the town but park outside the town or in the designated lot where there is parking or take a taxi or walk from our lodging. We have not decided on which towns to visit as we need to figure out the rental car piece first. We will need the car for 7 days and will be flying out of Rome. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. J
Why would you think Hertz in Orvieto would not honor a reservation? I would have no qualms about reserving there. Very handy.
The Hertz in Orvieto is exactly what you need. The office is at the bottom of the town, across from the train station, so you don't need to drive up into the town to get the car. It's really the most convenient, logical spot to pick up a car for what you want to do.
Thank-you so much for elaborating Hertz rental in Orvieto. One question, my husband is 6'4". He will not fit in a tiny car. Is there a decent selection in Orvieto? We don't want something large..just something he can fit in. Thoughts?
OP has obviously been watching old Seinfeld reruns.
I wouldn't worry too much about them having a car for you, as long as you reserve one. It may not be the exact car you thought you were going to get (ie a Blue Ford Escort) - there's never a guarantee of a specific car - but if Hertz says you have a car reserved, you should expect there to be one there for you. Just don't reserve from Worthy Rent-A-Car...if you do, be sure you get the extra insurance.
You might feel more comfortable going through Gemut.com. They are an American company specializing in European rentals. They were a great help to me the first couple of times we rented in Italy. Great service and prices. Tell them what you need and let them help you. Check out the publication on their website about driving in Europe.
Unless things have changed, Hertz is the ONLY rental agency in Orvieto. Small, but efficient.
Like Laurel, our first time rented thru' Gemut and had great service. They also have a great PDF that you can download on driving rules, traffic signs, tolls etc. that we found invaluable. Our rental vehicle thru' Hertz in Orvieto was a Ford Focus Hatchback and our 6'4" friend found it to be comfortable in the front seat but head height slightly lower/ but doable in the back seat due to downward curve of ceiling. It was a manual transmission diesel model. We kept the Ford for 3 weeks, dropping it off in Lamezia Terme. You can choose vehicle size thru' Gemut and you get the size but not necessarily the model/brand that you paid for usually. Another note re: rental offices that unlike airports, local offices such as Orvieto close at 1:00 pm on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays so plan your itinerary around that. Have a wonderful trip to Italy.

Don’t forget to get and IDL, a translation of your drivers license, for all drivers from AAA. About $25 and two passport photos.
