Rental car Florence airport

I'm renting a car at FLR for a day trip. Are roads clearly marked near airport about where to return rental cars?

You will be paying extra fees and taxes picking the car up at a airport location.
Hertz has a location on Sansovino, about 2 miles by taxi from the Florence train station. They give instructions to get out of town avoiding any ZTLs.

Rental area was once in the main airport parking, but due to construction works now the rental area is in via Palagio degli Spini, quite distant from the airport. Access to/from the airport ais by shuttle bus as the area is on the other side of the highway, under a railway viaduct. - Basically, that was a parking area that nobody wanted to use and it was assigned to car rentals when space got scarce. Getting there may be unclear even to a native Italian. Renting from the Sansovino location is probably easier and cheaper.

I will add something to lachera’s comment. While it is relatively easy to drive back to the rental center on Via Palagio degli Spini coming from the A11 freeway (basically from Prato or Firenze Nord), however if you come from the opposite direction (i.e. from the city center or from the airport) I still haven’t figure out how to drive to it without doing an illegal turn on Via Basili. I think the only legal way is to go around from Via Pantanida then turn left on Via Palagio degli Spini. Either way most Florentines would get lost.

In addition to Via Del Sansovino, Hertz has a new location they just opened this month at the Ponte di Varlungo. It’s on Via Ambrosoli. That would be the easiest if you plan to go south to the Chianti Road or to the A1 freeway entrance at Firenze Sud (for example to Montepulciano).

I guess the solution to Roberto's enigma is being coming from via Luigi Gori and turning left at the final traffic light on what seems to be named via Martucci; but I would not like to be the one explaining this route to a foreigner. Locating a rental agency there seems to confirm a pattern we often see in Florence municipal administration, that is finding solutions to construction work by devising routes so convoluted that nobody can really explain them.

One other point to note.... for driving in Italy, each driver listed on the rental form will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. You can easily obtain an IDP at any AAA/CAA office for a small fee. These are valid for one year.

Also, do not drive into the city of Florence as that will take you through ZTL areas, and each pass through one of the automated cameras will result in hefty fines.
