Any suggestions as to where to drop off a rental car in the Venice area.....Malpensa Airport? Mestre? Perhaps in Venice itself?

I believe that you can drop the car off at the giant Piazzale Roma in Venice itself.

Larry is correct. The dropoff is in Piazzale Roma. There is a huge building with all the rental agencies there.
Then, the Hellovenezia ticket counter (for vaporetto tickets/passes and Rolling Venice cards) is right across the street. And, the vaporetto stop is just a few steps from there.
It couldn't be easier ...

We missed our train from Florence to Venice few weeks ago because we could not find our rental car drop off in crazy downtown florence in time, so we just kept the car and drove to Venice unsure of how to get to Piazzale Roma but it was so easy to find. You will have no trouble! Have a wonderful trip!!

Lisa: What happened to you driving in downtown Florence has happened, once, to many of us (including me) and is why we try to warn the unsuspecting about driving into the Florence city center.

I recently did the reverse - picked up a car at Piazzale Roma and drove out of Venice. It is very simple - the square is just off the end of the causeway into Venice and the rental car agencies are well marked, easy to find and calm. On the other end, I had to drop off my car in Rome. Now - want to talk about chaos and confusion?????
