Will be staying near Pienza in June and would like to pick up a rental car near there.

I think the nearest car rental would be Chiusi- Hertz.
Next closest probably Siena

Check AutoEurope.com. Not all the small towns in Italy have car rentals, other than new car dealerships sometimes renting them for local use. Orvieto is another city that has a rather popular Hertz office for those going into and getting out of Rome by train.

How are you getting to Pienza, and where are you going before and after? It's probably easier to pick up your rental car in a larger city and drive to Pienza. If you need an automatic transmission, note that these will be much more available in airports and major cities than smaller places.

The closest town with major rental offices is CHIUSI, along the Florence-Rome standard speed railway (the high speed railway bypasses Chiusi and therefore high speed trains trains don’t stop in Chiusi).
Europcar, Hertz, Avis-Budget all have offices in Chiusi, however the availability of automatic transmission cars may be scarse to non existent. If you need auto transmission you are better off renting from Rome or Florence (depending from which you come from).
