Rental auto drop off near Rome

We plan to rent a car when we're done touring Florence for use in the Tuscany countryside. When we're ready to move on to Rome, we would like to drop it off in Orvieto or somewhere else near but outside of Rome and then hop on a train to Rome. Has anyone done this and do you have suggestions for actual auto pick up and drop off locations?

After visiting Florence, you could rent your car at the Florence airport. It will be easier to get to and allows you easier access to the autobahn. You will also be able to avoid any ZTL zones in the city. If you are caught in this zone without prior authorization, you will get a ticket in the mail. Orvieto would be a good place to return the car on your way to Rome. It's also a lovely town to explore and stay the night. Very easy access, an hour by train, to Rome. Before your trip, go to AAA and obtain your International Driver's License. No exam is necessary, just $15 and two passport size photos (they can take them there, if necessary). It's required for driving in Italy. Have a great time exploring the Tuscan countryside.

We are in the same boat. We are a group of 4 sharing a farm house near Siena. We arrive in Rome and pick up our car at the airport. We decided to drive it back to avoid the cost of the bus or train which is not cheap when you need 4 tickets. We can drop the car off at Termini near the train station and the drive is not anywhere near the traffic zones we need to worry about. We are using Hertz. Our hotel for our last night is close to the train station too.

If you make a mistake on via Giovanni Giolotti, that runs along the south side of Termini, be careful how you go around the block there are ZTL's lurking just south of that street

Getting to the rental return garage at Roma Termini, depending on which direction you're arriving from, can be a tad confusing. Perhaps the easiest way is to come down the left side of the train station on Via Marsala. When you come to a tunnel to turn right (after passing by the station), make sure you turn at the 2nd right - and not the first right. There are two lanes that go under the tunnel and you definitely want the second one! Otherwise you'll be doing another lap around Roma Termini as the 1st RIGHT lane takes you back to the train station. As far as ZTL's, yes there are a few close to Termini.
