I am planning a family trip to Cinque Terra and am giving this area 3 days. Would love to get some suggestions re. rental apartments in Riomaggiore .. not too expensive, please. Is Riomaggiore the best of the 5 villages to stay in?

Have you tried tripadvisor.com? I just came back from there and stayed at La Baia di Rio and I really enjoyed it. I had the large room (for 4 - 2 adults and 2 kids) I do recommend the town for a few days. You can easily get to it by train or car. I went by car - and considering the train strikes in Italy I do not want to stay in a town that the only way to get in and out in a meaningful way is by train. With that said, is it the "best"? That is a matter of opinion - I have stayed there and Monterrossa. I really liked Riomaggiore - a bit less crowded with fewer people but also there is less to do in town at night. The swimming was decent in two locations - there is a rock beach and the harbor. It is also a very short walk to Manorola - maybe 20 minutes.

Just returned from CT. All the towns have good points and by train are very close. Don't worry too much about where to stay. Riomaggiore had the best laundry and cheapest grocery store. Vernazza is the most picturesque. We stayed in Corniglia which is the most intimate. www.bebcorniglia.com. We had apt 1 for 4 people for 90 euros. Good luck!
