That you will likely pay a huge drop charge if you pick up in France and drop in Italy. Better to take a train into Italy and pick up somewhere ther.

and that each driver needs an IDP. And that you can lose your shirt driving in ZTLs. Have a dig around the search button, above. Italian driving, inter-country rentals, and rentals have been discussed frequently.

I personally find it helpful to have a good map in addition to a gps. I am usually the navigator and since the purpose of having the car is to be able to wander, see things along the way, stop on small towns not served by trains, etc. a good look at the Map before we start each driving day is part of our routine. I also take the time to print out very detailed instructions from either the hotel website or google maps as to how to get to our final destination. There are some things we don't have here-walled cities for example where you may or may not be actually able to park near your hotel. for instance, if you are only visiting Lucca then you would want to park outside the walls, but our hotel had parking available to its guests so we drove inside (and it still took quite a while to wind through the streets and find it!). But we love driving in Europe. Have a great trip.
