VRBO.com is your best bet. I have rented apartments on two previous trips to Italy and had great success.

I have had great success with vrbo.com for quite a few trips taken. For the one Im planning to Rome though I found a wonderful apartment at homeaway.com. Im not sure if they are sister companies because they often mirror the same places but it's worth the extra effort to check. Happy travels!

VRBO is great, I will offer a locally owned and operated (Castellina) alternative, Tuscany Rent Direct. They have a large selection throughout the region, offering Tuscan Villa Rentals direct from owner just like VRBO or HomeAway, etc. -

And - they have a pretty good blog too, with tons of Tuscany travel information if you need ideas on what to do.

Margot, we use VRBO.com and Homelidays.com for our EU rentals, with much success. It is always a good idea to find a rental with many good recomendations from satisfied renters.

When we rented in Sorrento, we used one of the local Sorrento web sites to find a fantastic apt.

Don't forget to check out Agritourisimos near the locations that you are thinking. We found two great self-contained apts with pools in Tuscany and Umbria that were at Agris...and they were less than $75 EU/nite!
