Any thoughts on whether 4 adults should drive from Rome to Pompeii for a day trip or take a train? Thanks.

Take the train. It's much quicker and lots cheaper. Also, you can't drive into Naples and parking is hard to find and very expensive. If you book far enough in advance you can get very cheap fares. We paid 19 euros each last summer.

Train is so easy and stress free. When you get off train in Naples, face the street and to your right is ticket booth for train to Pompeii. That train is downstairs and takes about half hour and cost about 5 euro or less. We were going one way so can't tell about round trip. Be sure to get off at the correct Pompeii station, I seem to recall is Pompeii Scavi but others can confirm. From train station, ruins are only maybe 500 feet or so from the station. Wear good shoes and take water bottle with you. Enjoy.
