Rent a car from Rome to Pompeii

Any thoughts on whether 4 adults should drive from Rome to Pompeii for a day trip or take a train? Thanks.

By train is easier, faster, cheaper.
Same distance as Ft Worth to Abilene. The train to Naples takes only just over one hour. A car can't.

A train is so much easier. It is nearly door to door. Get discounted tickets between Rome and Naples and it will be much cheaper than a car.

Pat, your rental car is competing with a train from Rome to Naples that goes 160MPH and is non-stop on most runs. 1hr10min. If you purchase non-refundable tickets 119 days out, the fare is 19Euro one-way. Regular fare is 43Euro. Once at Napoli-Centrale, you go downstairs and take the Circumvesuviana train to the Pompei Scavi stop. Overall, just over 2.0hrs. Interestingly, www.viamichelin.com shows the drive in a rental car to be 3 hours. Your choice.
