Rent a car

Begin in Milan , end in Milan. 6 people. Need a van or minivan. What is the best rental company you can recommend?

Every time I go to Italy (once or twice a year pandemics permitting) I use:
www.AutoEurope.com
or
www.kemwel.com

The two have merged years ago and it’s now the same company (based in Maine), however I check prices in both websites as they may differ. The process is however the same, as it is the same shop.

They are a broker, therefore they sell contracts with the main companies (Avis-Budget, Europcar, Hertz). but with a significant discount compared to going to the rental companies directly.

I choose the best deal they have at the time of my travel, so over the years I’ve picked all of the above 3 companies. I had no problems with any. I also click on the ZERO DEDUCTIBLE option in the website. It’s a bit more expensive (maybe $4 more a day). But I prefer the peace of mind since the deductible in case of damage is often €1,000 or more. One year I returned the car with a small scratch and I’m glad I had that deal. I had to pay nothing for that damage, which could have cost me probably more than the 2 week rental itself (and my American policy with State Farm does not cover me overseas). Be aware that most credit cards do not cover insurance in Italy and it is mandatory that you have insurance with your rental car (you cannot waive it).

One more thing. If in your party there are at least two people willing and able to drive, it is better to went two economy cars rather than a van. Renting a van in Italy costs more than renting 3 economy cars. Also that gives people in the party the ability to split sometimes and do different things if they so desire. Driving a van in Italy can also pose problems as streets in ancient cities are often very narrow and difficult to negotiate with a large vehicle. A minivan also may not have enough storage space to hold luggage for 6 people.

Finally, another consideration. You have not shared your intended destinations/itinerary. However let it be known that if your party plans to visit cities such as Milan, Venice, Turin, Bologna, Florence or any other large city, renting a car may not be the best solution for your party. The trains are a much better option, in terms of convenience and also cost. A car makes sense only if you plan to venture in the countryside or small rural villages. Share your intended itinerary and you will receive plenty of advice from all of us on how to best travel in your specific case.
