Regular Colosseum tour VS Underground tour

Hello everyone,
My wife and I are traveling to Rome in two weeks and I am trying to decide which is the best option. I am a history buff (and teacher) and love learning about Roman history. Visiting the Colosseum is something I have been looking forward to for a long long time.

My question is do we take the underground tour (which I hear is really cool) or the regular tour. The only reason I am going back and forth is because I read that the underground tour skips parts that the regular tour sees. Will I be missing out? I know the information will be the same, but will the sites and impact be effected?

Thank you for you help

We loved the underground. However, we have never done the regular tour so it would be hard to compare. We did a night time tour and it was AWESOME!

The regular tour doesn't allow access to the underground and third ring. The underground tour was so good. I would have been disappointed if we hadn't done it. My history major father and elementary school teacher daughter loved every minute of it. You can do the rest of the Colosseum when the underground tour is over. Access to the underground and third ring is limited. We felt like we were the only ones there.

The information on both tours is exactly the same. They talk about the structure, the construction and the use of the structure. The only difference is the areas you get to visit. On the regular tour you don't visit the underground or third tier. If theses areas don't hold a specific importance to you then you can just take the regular tour and get all of the same information that you would on the underground tour.

Underground tour was awesome! We have never been on the regular one, but I can't imagine we missed any info by taking the underground. Plus, hardly any people around you at all. It was awesome, I would definitely choose underground.

The tour doesn't go to the main level, which is swarmed with people - but you can always go onto that level on your own after and look at some of the exhibits and such.

Kim, you didn't miss any information as the information on both tours is the same. It's just the locations which are different.

After the underground tour, seeing the main level on your own gives you the most comprehensive experience and part of it at your own pace.
