Regionale train ticket validation at Termini - new system

Stazione Termini now restricts access to all train platforms: ticket holders only. This may not be news to some, but worth mentioning for those who do not know. It's working well from what we have experienced. I worried as this program was implemented that it would impede movement and make the Termini experience even worse. So far I think people actually move better and more orderly as is an absence of non-passengers on the platforms. No longer does one have "helpers" on the platform or panhandlers working through the train before departure. Very nice!

Today we took a rare regionale for a local trip and were surprised we did not have to validate our tickets. As we passed through the security checkpoint the agent looked at our tickets then used a wand across the validation area that imprinted the date and time we entered, validating the ticket. Very efficient and no chance of forgetting to validate. So if this happens, do not be surprised, it is legitimate.

I'm glad they are finally getting that organised. When we were there in March it seemed that the sort of barrier they had around the Freccia platforms was exceedingly porous.

Laurel,

This is certainly a change. I wonder if they will implement this at other stations?

As a long time pickpocket I don't like this change.

There goes my chance to make an "honest" buck stealing $$$ from the money belts of those Rick Steves' proselytes.

But, don't worry. I'll be waiting for you on the Circumvesuviana.

Ken, I suspect that Milano has also implemented this across all binari. Last time we were through there the gates looked extensive, but I was on a Freccia and did not check out the Regional platforms.

TominMN, it does feel safer, although there are plenty of "helpers" by the ticket machines. Usually attractive young women who speak English quite well. I think their handlers are lurking around the corner.

Roberto, you will have to stick to the Circumvesuviana as the #64 (funny Kathy!) is too crowded even for a pickpocket. Piazza San Pietro should be a particularly good hunting ground during Jubilee, though.

Laurel,

I was through Milano Centrale in September, and was surprised to see the gates. I was only on the track side, so didn't have to pass through the gates. I was also through Firenze SMN and was surprised to see that there have been no changes there (at least, not yet).
