We will be arriving in the Lake Como area early May for a short stay before traveling south.
We want to experience a portion of the Bernina train route and it seems to me that taking the regional trains instead of the twice a day Bernina express is very doable.
We will have a car and can drive to the Tirano station and park
Maybe just go one or two stops past Saint Moritz and then come back
Does anyone have any experience with the regional trains versus the “fancier” for Express?
Thanks!
Universal opinion on this forum is that the regional trains are highly recommended over the fancy Bernina Express trains. More frequent, no reservation fee, windows that open for better pictures, less crowded so you can move around as the scenery changes. No onboard services, so bring your own drinks and snacks, which will be a whole lot cheaper bought in Italy.
We rode the regional cars on the Bernina Express and were quite happy with the experience, for all the reasons Sam just gave. Enjoy!
Last October, while staying in Varenna, I took the Bernina regional train from Tirano to Pontresina and back for a day trip. It was great. I spent a couple hours walking around Pontresina and Having a late lunch and a nice bakery cafe with a view. Pontresina is a couple stops before St. Moritz. I was not interested in St. Moritz and I wanted to do the return trip when there was still dayligt. It will stay light longer for your trip in May.
I agree that the regional train option is fine.
Thanks, everyone!
Regional it is!
