Regional Train Tickets that were Purchased in Advance

So, I keep reading on various posts that regional train tickets MUST be validated. Although I've always done that in the past, we got all of our train tickets online at trenitalia ahead of time this time and simply have a PNR code for our regional train to Orvieto. We should be fine just showing that to the conductor, as we would any other train ticket, correct? Thanks!

Yup! I had no trouble doing this on several trips in Italy last fall. My iPhone wouldn't fit in the validation machine!

As I understand it PNR codes are for collecting the real tickets from machines at the station before you get on the train. And then validate them to be sure!

Actually, it kind of would. Just show your tickets to the conductor and she/he will scan the QR code right from your device. No need to print anything - open the PDF of the ticket you bought on your phone, tablet, or even a laptop - as long as the conductor can read and scan it. Or use the Trenit app on your phone to buy them directly there.

No steve that was true only if you purchased on italiarail, trenitalia's official US based re-seller.

No ticket purchased on www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en needs to be time-stamped. When you purchase on-line a Regionale ticket, the 4 hours period of validity start with the departure of the booked train. It's written on all the PDF tickets sent by trenitalia: pre-validated.

That's all, but if you like the clonk! noise made by stamping boxes you can stamp all the tickets you want. Just don't punch in an expensive slim smartphone.

I've never had to collect tickets from machines that were purchased at www.trainline.eu. I've always printed out a "hard copy" and just shown them to the Conductor. I could have saved them to my iPhone but I still don't trust that method as I've had the phone "lock up" on me when I was trying to retrieve boarding passes. Maybe the new iPhones that will be introduced tomorrow will work better in that regard.

Tickets purchased from Trenitalia or Trainline are pre-validated but the trip must be started within four hours of the departure time stated on the ticket.
