Regional Train Ticket Question

So I'm in Florence and plan to go to Pistoia via Prato on a day trip. My question is if I purchase the regional ticket to Pistoia, can I get off for a few hours and walk around Prato a bit insuring that I don't violate the 6 hr time expiration of the regional ticket? or should I purchase 2 tickets, one for Florence-Prato and then a 2nd for Prato-Pistoia? I'm thinking things will be back open on January 2nd but if that's a bad idea please let me know. Of course I will purchase another regional ticket for the return portion of the trip.

Why so difficult for a 70-cent price difference between one through ticket (EUR 4,50) or two separate ones (2 * EUR 2,60)?

Yes and certainly, I didn't want to make it sound like we wanted to cheat the train system but I wanted to see if that was legal.

Thanks!

I thought it was five hours for a ticket purchased in the station. An electronic ticket is only good for four hours from the time you selected for the ticket. What you suggest is not illegal provide you stay within the time window.

It's 4 hours, it doesn't matter if you get tickets online, at the counter or at a Tobacconist shop. What changes is the way you "open the time window".

The exceptions to the 4 hours rule I know are:

  • Regionale trains running in Liguria (can't remember if the validity period is only 75 minutes or a little more)
  • Local trains in Lombardy run by Trenitalia's sister company TreNord (6 hours)
  • the Leonardo Express airport train to Fiumicino (90 minutes?)

Thanks to all the responses.

From the Trinitalia site:

Tickets (printed receipts) are valid for only one journey, on the section requested, on the Suburban, Regional, Direct and Inter-regional trains, provided this is allowed for from among the journey solutions offered by Italian state railways and provided the official departure time (as per Timetable) is within 4 hours from the departure of the train selected when buying.

This makes me think the 4 hour window is based on departure time.

The page is:

But that said, I think I will purchase the two tickets regardless and keep from looking at my watch too much. Hey I'm on vacation right?

Thanks again for the great advise!

Departure time of the selected train if you buy online. The time printed on the ticket by the validating machine if you buy at the counter.
