I need to stop in Reggio Nell'Emilia for one night due to business (an excuse for a leisure trip), but don't really know much about train service to the city or where to stay. Any ideas would be welcome (not deluxe, but not budget). THANKS!

I wonder how many recommendations you'll get here - kind of off the beaten tourist track. Have you looked at Tripadvisor.com? You'll be able to get listing, prices and reviews from past customers. Good luck!

There is a wonderful theater there and they might have a live performance while you're there.
It's a great side trip.
