Reggio Calabria to Los Angeles...

At the end of a three week trip from Rome to Reggio Calabria, my wife and I, sadly, will have to return home to Los Angeles. I'm wondering whether it would be better to spend a couple of extra days in Sicily and fly from Palermo or get back to Rome. The LAX - Rome, Palermo - LAX route is quite a bit more expensive plus the added cost for days in Sicily. But seven or eight hours in a train back to Rome doesn't sound great either. Anyone have sage advice to help me solve this dilemma? Is there another southern Italy airport to fly home from? Buying my own plane is not an option at this point. :-(

It’s often much less expensive to fly roundtrip from LAX to Naples instead of Rome. I would do that and independently book a flight from Palermo or Catania to Naples a day or two before the international flight back home. In other words, check the cost of buying a roundtrip LAX-NAP ticket and then a separate ticket for the one-hour flight from Sicily to Naples. You’ll want to be in Naples at least one night before your return flight home. With two nights, you can explore Capri or the Amalfi Coast by ferry or Pompeii by train. From LAX, roundtrip flights to Naples are often hundreds less than flying into Rome. Hotels in Naples are less costly as well.

@ Kenko: Awesome idea! Thanks! I'll check out Naples. It's odd that out of over half a dozen trips to Italy, we've never been to southern Italy. Or (much to my embarrassed astonishment) Rome. This is our attempt to fix that.

ITA Airways flies to Rome from both Lamezia Terme (SUF) and Reggio Calabria (REG).
I think ITA might be the only option from Calabria to Rome.

See if either airport works for you. The Lamezia Terme airport is close to the station, in case that option is more palatable than from Reggio C.

Or you can take the train from Reggio Calabria to Naples to get a plane home.

Expenses for extra days in either Sicily or Campania or Calabria are luckily going to cost less than extra days in Switzerland or northern Europe !!
