We are here now and would love any tips or suggestions. Thanks!
We spent the day there to see these statues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riace_bronzes
They are awesome and the story behind their discovery very interesting!
I went to Reggio Calabria specifically to visit Stilo. It's a tiny inland hilltop village with an amazing Byzantine church. Not the easiest place to get to, but there is a rail and bus connection. Don't know about this time of the year, though. I went there in May. Another place I wanted to visit is Gerace, but even in May, I couldn't find public transportation.
The Lungomare is a nice place to walk. You can see Sicily across the straits and, if you're lucky, see plumes of smoke coming out of Etna.
Becky,
Apparently there is a modest 'Botanical Garden' in the city's NW. We never made it but online photos seemed to imply that its cafe was a very restive spot. *Verify hours.
Lorenzo Labate is a Reggio-based guide. He took us to Pentedatillo last year and we highly recco him. Great guy. Great daytrip to a unique place.
I am done. the end.
My father is from that area. I went with my son in 2018 for 2 weeks and then spent some time in Sicily. A book by Karen Haid helped me. Title: Calabria: the other Italy. Her book guided my decisions. I really enjoyed Reggio, Tropea, and a small fishing town next to Gallico (which is near Reggio). Good luck!
We spent 5 nights in Reggio Calabria in November. It was a great city for walking. Ended up having the best sushi of my life at Casual Fish and Sushi.
