We have planned a full day and evening to explore the archaeological museum in Naples, and Naples in general, leaving from Rome and returning to Rome. But we just learned about Reggia di Caserta which sounds like a fabulous "must see". Caserta apears to be on the main train line between Naples and Rome. Trenitalia shows 40 minute trips north to Caserta from Naples. The Reggia closes at 7 pm and archaeo museum closes 7:30. It does not matter how late we return to Rome. For those of you who have visited the Reggia, is adding a stop in Caserta to visit it worth deducting the time from Naples? And since this "Versailles of Italy" looks truly enormous, can we manage to squeeze all of this into one day and evening?
I haven't been there in years, it's a beautiful palace if you like Rococo/Baroque (which I don't). What would you give up in Napoli? You would need a few hours, between train connections and the size of the palace and grounds.
You might consider an afternoon to Tivoli or Frascati instead while you are in Roma.
Can it be done? YES!
Will you be exhausted? YES!
For me, while I enjoy the Palace, the Grounds are the draw. For those here not familiar with
this gem. http://www.madeinsouthitalytoday.com/caserta-royal-palace.php this site gives you
a glimpse. Caserta is seldom packed with the hoards normally associated with such sites.
Like Zoe, I would want to know what you would be leaving out in Naples.
Try this as an itinerary.
Train Rome-Caserta 8:05-9:13 station is across the street from the Palace. Just walking thru
the entrance to the gardens gives you a feeling of the opulence of this palace.
Spend 4 hours then head to Naples.
Caserta-Naples 14:12-14:55
Head downstairs in the Naples station and take the metro to the Museo stop.
You will be about 1 block from the Archaeological Museum. 2-3 hours.
Cross the street, go thru the Galleria and have a Napoli Pizza in the Piazza Bellini.
Metro back to the station. Train Naples-Rome. 20:36-22:21.
