Regatta Storica Event in Venice Sept. 6, 2026 - advice for crowds and Vaporetto

Ciao Friends! Has anyone been to the annual Regatta Storica in Venice? This year’s boat races are Sept. 6 with the blessing of the boats on Sept. 3.

I understand that the Vaporetto (water “bus”) is going to be not operating on Sept. 6 starting about 2:00 PM because of the races in the Grand Canal.

Question 1 - will the Vaporetto be “shut down” any other days/times besides the official races on Sept. 6?

Question 2 - are the crowds worse because of this festival? There is also an international film festival in Venice at the same time Sept. 2 - 12 and I am wondering if 2 big events will make the crowds unbearable.

Grazie!

I've twice recently been to Venice for at least 12 days beginning on September 13 or 16, which was after the regatta and the film festival. It has proven to be a good time from the weather perspective, but the city was still busy until I broke away from the path between the train station, Rialto and Piazza San Marco. I would expect it to be a bit more crowded at the time you'll be there, but I'm only guessing. You might take a look at hotel rates on booking.com for your week and the following week to see how they compare. I imagine they track with the number of visitors. The Art Biennale will also be running in September, but that's a multi-month exhibition and unlikely to cause spikes in visitors during any particular week.

Whether you will find the number of visitors unbearable I cannot say, but I spend as much time as possible wandering along back canals; if I only experienced what I see along the main pathway to San Marco, I wouldn't be able to tolerate the city for long. The thing is, it's not going to be better in the future unless you want to visit in the winter. I wouldn't want to do that, because I like reasonably warm weather and long days. As far as I'm concerned, the trick is to get off the beaten path.
