Recs for family of 5 (ages 15,13 and 5) - arrive Rome - June 7, depart Zurich June 19

So.... we pulled the trigger on the airfare last night.... and that is ALL the plans set so far.

I'm looking for recommendations for family of 5 (ages 15,13 and 5) - arriving Rome on June 7, flying out of Zurich June 19.
We know we want to start in Rome, then hit some beaches (I'm thinking Cinqua Terre).
I've been to Milan once and loved it, so I'm thinking we'll stop there on the way to Zurich.

Is there a 'tried and true' path for tourists which starts in Rome and heads north?

I'm looking for the best trade-off between 'must see sights' that minimizes transit time. ;)

Any input on where to go and how to get there is much appreciated. I've purchased the RS Rome book and am doing homework, but would greatly appreciate advice up front.

I'd start with each end and work to the middle. For example, first read up on Rome well enough to determine how many days your family should stay there. Then look at places in the north that will offer an easy transit to Zurich--and how many days will you need ot be there before flying out?
You will probably have time for only one or two stops once you deduct both ends. The Cinque Terre villages offer one beach, and it ain't all that.
