We have reserved 2 rooms at a small B.+B. in Levanto for Nov. 24th. and have not been able to find information as to the recovery of that town. Does anyone know if tourists are being allowed to enter Levanto yet after the flooding. Will we be in the way for the clean-up effort or is it O.K. to visit Levanto yet? Thanks for any info. Fran
Forgive what may be a stupid question, but have you called or emailed your B&B?
I agree. That would be my first contact. And if you don't get a response then you probably can assume the worst. It is not just a question of whether you can get in or not but services - restaurants, transportation, etc. - that would be functioning at that time. That could be a greater concern than just having a place to sleep. I know Monterosso and Vernazza were hit very hard but am not familiar with Levanto or did you mean Livorno which is some distance south had no problems.
Levanto is on the coast just to the north of Monterosso. It's actually the next train stop. I can't find news accounts of how hard it was hit, but I'm sure it got some flooding, judging by the topography visible on Google Maps.
Fran, I don't believe Levanto was as badly damaged as Monterosso and Vernazza, so it's quite possible they're still able to host visitors. However, as the others have said it would be a really good idea to contact the Hotel and confirm that. Although you won't be able to visit the villages affected by the flooding, you MAY be able to visit one or two of the others. I'm not sure of the current status of the trains between Levanto and La Spezia? Some other places you might like to visit in that area are Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. Good luck!
I've visited Levanto several times. It is downhill from the train station, but doesn't seem as steep in geography as most of the CT. Bonossola is another nearby town; small but walkable and with beach. Santa Margherita is a good choice. If you want to stay in the CT, Riomaggiore or Manarola or Corniglia should be open.
Despite to his proximity to CT first village (Monterosso) Levanto was only marginally involved in october 25's flood due to the larger size of his coastal valley which gave to the water enough room to flow to the sea by our two rivers without big damages like it did in CT. Tourist are welcome and fully allowed to enter Levanto. All motor roads, hotels, restaurants, beaches and almost all of our 70 km of hicking tracks are clear and open, and absolutely free as usual.
We recently restored also track n. 15/16 between Levanto and Mesco point (over Monterosso), a wooded, scenic, beautiful alternative to well known scenic route n. 1. C u !
