We will visit Pompeii, Opluntis and Herculaneum from Naples next spring. This will be our second time in Pompeii. We are looking for an archeological guide that can pick us up in Naples and spend the day with us. Private guide and driver. Thank you all, and Happy 250 years of independence. Maruchi
We loved our guided tour to Pompeii with Askos, she was a trained archeologist and absolutely wonderful I know they do private tours as well to all the other sites, Estimated Prophet on the Forum recommended them to us.

Pompeii is easy enough to reach by train if you need to meet them there via the rickety circumvesuviana train that drops you right at the entrance - stop Pompei Scavi Villa Dei Misteri. But transfer between Pompeii and Herculaneum might be difficult, especially on a tight schedule, without a car. Not all circumvesuviana trains stop at Herculaneum (stop Ercoli Scava) so it limits which trains will work for you.
Don't underestimate the size of Pompeii - I did in my first visit and many people do. Also there is on-going excavation site that you can walk above on an elevated platform and watch them work so don't miss that.

We were very happy with Askos Tours in 2022. I believe they will pick you up in Naples.
We stayed IN the town of Pompei, (one i) 5 minutes walk from the Ampitheatro entrance, not the main entrance. You could take the Circumvesuviana as described by Tod, meet Askos at the main entrance to the Pompeii scavi (you need to walk up a hill to the entrance) and go from there. But I'm sure they could design exactly what you need if you really wanted a driver to pick you up in Naples. I found Askos very helpful by email on their website, they got back to me within a day or 2.
I can't imagine doing Pompeii, Herculaneum & Oplontis is one day! If you have time, do Pompeii in one long day, the others another day. I worked out walking in a pool & doing PT for 6 months to prepare for the rough walking!! hahaha (I'm in my late 60's.) We wore Merrill Moab 3 hiking boots & I had walking sticks, I was the only person I saw who had them, gosh what a help they were. That overhead walkway inside Pompeii where you get to gaze into the ruins was a peak life experience! I hope you have a wonderful time.
We will stay several weeks in Naples and we are planning in seeing the sites on diferent days, that's what we did the last time we were in Naples in 2023. We had a Rick Steeve archeologist recommnedation guide then, but we were very dissapointed with her.
